What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of gentle massage rooted in the traditions of oriental medicine. In practise, it combines more modern techniques borrowed from physiotherapy and osteopathy with sustained perpendicular pressure applied to the body through a layer of clothing using thumbs, fingers, elbows and knees. It is deeply relaxing and replenishing to receive, promoting the body’s own powers of recuperation, regeneration and healing.

How does Shiatsu work?

Shiatsu balances the body’s vitality, or Qi, through gentle manipulation and application of pressure to the channel pathways and acupoints, or Tsubos. To ensure safety, a full medical history is taken from each patient to ascertain their physical and emotional well-being. In addition, listening, looking and touch diagnosis techniques are used to make a full evaluation. Using this holistic approach, the treatment can address a variety of specific physical, mental and emotional problems.
